Supermarket Cake vs Catalogue Cake vs Custom Cake

Updated: Jan 30, 2021

At Sweet For You Cakes, I like to classify celebration cakes into 3 categories:

  1. The Supermarket Cake

  2. The Catalogue Cake

  3. The Custom/bespoke cake

Each category actually has a different target audience and I'll explain the differences between each one so you can have a better understanding of the price differences between them.

THE SUPERMARKET CAKE

This is your cheapest option for a store brought cake. We've all enjoyed those mud cakes from Coles, Woolworths and Aldi (no judgement), and Coles has stepped up their game with a select range of celebration cakes. Now why are these so cheap? These cakes are mass produced and pre-frozen, so when stock on the shelves need replenishing they just defrost some cakes and they can put them on the shelves for people to buy. They are also full of additives to preserve the cakes for as long as possible.

PERFECT FOR THOSE LAST MINUTE OCCASIONS

THE CATALOGUE CAKE

Now I like to classify businesses such as Ferguson Plarre and the Cheesecake shop under this category. These cakes are at a slightly higher price point compared to the supermarket cake. These cakes are made to order but you can only choose from the designs they offer (minimal customization may be available). Most people are very content with this type of cake for their celebration.

PERFECT FOR THOSE WHO PLAN AT LEAST 2 WEEKS IN ADVANCE, WANT A SPECIAL CAKE BUT DON'T WANT THE HIGH END PRICE TAG

THE CUSTOM/BESPOKE CAKE

The final category, which Sweet For You Cakes falls under, is the custom cake. These cakes have a wide price range, from similar costs to the catalogue cakes to $$$$. Why such a large range? Well this is largely due to the amount of time spent creating a cake just for YOU. Quick and simple cake designs have a lower price tag whilst cakes that are sculpted, have intricate piped details, adorned with sugar flowers, or have gumpaste figurines take a LOT of time and therefore have a price tag reflecting that amount of work.

PERFECT FOR THOSE SUPER ORGANISED PEOPLE THAT WANT A CAKE TAILORED TO THEM

TIPS FOR ORDERING A CUSTOM CAKE WITH US:

  1. Check out my price guide to know the starting prices per cake size.

  2. Let me know what your budget is. This is very important for myself to be able to design a cake with the appropriate level of detail.

  3. Have some flexibility in design. You may send me a cake design but it may not fit your budget. THAT'S OK. The great thing about a custom cake is that I can alter the design to fit your budget if need be.
